What S 8914 does, verified February 21, 2026

The bill aims to amend the criminal procedure law to regulate the possession of firearms by certain law enforcement officers in New York. The law enforcement officers in question include taxi and limousine inspectors, as well as special patrolmen appointed by the police commissioner for specific duties. These officers are only authorized to carry firearms if they have obtained the necessary licenses and have been authorized by their employers to possess firearms. The bill also establishes that certain officers, such as school safety officers and parking control specialists, have the power to carry firearms regardless of their duties. Furthermore, the bill provides that appointments to these positions can be made to last indefinitely, unless the police commissioner chooses to renew or terminate the appointment. The bill takes effect immediately.
