What S 993 does, verified January 11, 2026

The bill aims to expand eligibility for awards to victims of a crime in New York. A surviving spouse of a victim who died from indirect causes related to the crime can receive an award for out-of-pocket losses incurred as a result of the crime. A spouse, child, or stepchild of a victim who has sustained personal physical injury due to the crime can also receive an award. The bill also deems a victim who commits suicide within two years of the crime as having died as a direct result of the crime, unless the office determines otherwise. In cases where the victim committed suicide, the office will disregard their responsibility for the injury. The changes will take effect immediately.
