<p> This bill amends existing state laws and enacts new sections to strengthen protections for companion animals and impose stricter penalties on offenders. The legislation requires peace officers to complete at least twenty-four hours of annual continuing professional training, with a mandatory minimum of two hours dedicated specifically to animal welfare and cruelty laws. It also establishes rules allowing officers to earn training credit for providing drug prevention education while prohibiting the use of such credit to offset mandatory hands-on training requirements. Additionally, the bill prohibits individuals convicted of felony animal abuse offenses from owning any dog and those convicted of misdemeanor animal abuse offenses from owning a dog for two years following conviction or release from incarceration.
