Ohio · House · 136th General Assembly (2025–2026) · last verified September 24, 2026

What HB 658 does, verified September 24, 2026

The bill creates a specialty license plate for supporting housing and emergency living transitions, empowerment, and recovery. The "shelter" license plate can be applied for by the owner or lessee of any vehicle of a class approved by the registrar. The registrar will issue the license plate and a validation sticker upon receipt of a completed application, compliance with certain requirements, and payment of the regular license tax. A contribution of $30 will be collected for each application, with $10 of that amount going to the public safety-highway purposes fund. The remaining $20 will be deposited into the shelter license plate contribution fund, which will be used to issue grants to shelters, emergency housing providers, and nonprofits that help individuals experiencing homelessness.
