SB 415: Regulate sale procedures at certain retail establishments
Retail establishments with self-service checkouts must have certain requirements in place. These include providing at least one staffed checkout, limiting purchases to 15 items, and advertising this limit to customers. If an establishment operates multiple self-service checkouts, they must have at least one employee for every three checkouts and ensure one employee is monitoring the area at all times. Self-service checkouts are prohibited for certain items, such as those requiring identification or theft deterrent measures. Establishments must also post signage with information about the requirements and enforcement options under the law. Customers or employees can bring a civil action for a violation, with penalties calculated based on the number of employees working on the premises and the length of the violation.
