AB 1186: Data collection: race and ethnicity: minimum categories.

This bill requires state agencies to collect demographic data on the ethnic origin, ethnicity, or race of Californians. The data must include at least the minimum categories for race and ethnicity, as well as the top 9 largest detailed categories, and prescribed write-in options. The data must be made available to the public, except for personal identifying information. A new position, the Chief Statistician of California, will be established within the Demographic Research Unit to standardize the collection of demographic data across state agencies. The Chief Statistician will oversee the implementation of these provisions and provide technical assistance. State agencies must submit a report to the legislature and the Assembly Committee on Governmental Organization on compliance with these provisions starting in 2027. The report must be submitted annually thereafter.
