AB 1187: Firearms: safety certificates.
The bill aims to enhance firearm safety in California by requiring individuals who purchase or receive firearms to possess a valid firearm safety certificate. Starting July 1, 2027, applicants for a firearm safety certificate will need to complete an 8-hour training course that includes instruction on firearm safety and handling and live-fire shooting exercises. The training course will be developed and implemented by the Department of Justice. Additionally, personal firearm importers will need to obtain a valid firearm safety certificate and include a copy of the certificate in their reports submitted to the Department of Justice.
