California · Assembly · 2025–2026 Regular Session · last verified December 7, 2025

What AB 1414 does, verified December 7, 2025

This bill adds a new provision to the civil code that allows tenants to opt out of paying for internet service provider subscriptions in connection with their tenancy. The landlord or their agent must allow the tenant to make this choice. If the landlord or their agent refuses, the tenant can deduct the cost of the subscription from their rent. The bill also prohibits retaliation against the tenant for exercising their rights under this provision.
