AB 1514: Worker classification: employees and independent contractors: licensed manicurists: commercial fishers.
This bill would amend the labor code to clarify the classification of workers as employees or independent contractors. It would remove an exemption for licensed manicurists that expired on January 1, 2025, and reapply it until January 1, 2029. The exemption would require licensed manicurists to meet specified conditions. The bill would also extend the exemption for commercial fishers working on American vessels until January 1, 2031. The exemption would make commercial fishers eligible for unemployment insurance benefits subject to certain conditions. The annual report on the use of unemployment insurance in the commercial fishing industry would be due on June 30 instead of March 1.
