AB 1889: Protective orders.

This bill aims to amend California's protective order laws. The existing law allows courts to issue orders restraining defendants from contacting victims in cases of domestic violence, human trafficking, or certain crimes. These orders can be valid for up to 10 years or 2 years after a person's release from prison or jail, whichever is later. For defendants convicted of battery against specified persons, including spouses, the existing law allows orders to be valid for up to 15 years or 2 years after release. The bill extends this duration to 15 years or 2 years after release, respectively. This change imposes a state-mandated local program and requires reimbursement from the state for certain costs.
