AB 473: Environmental advertising: recyclability.

California · Assembly · 2025–2026 Regular Session · last verified February 3, 2026

What AB 473 does, verified February 3, 2026

This bill aims to improve environmental advertising by clarifying what is considered recyclable in California. The existing law prohibits making deceptive claims about a product's recyclability. The bill would delete an existing provision that allows products to be recyclable if they are part of a program established by state or federal law. Starting in 2027, the bill would require a product to be considered recyclable in California if the producer is approved by a producer responsibility organization to participate in it. By 2032, the bill would require a product to be recyclable if the producer complies with the requirements of the Plastic Pollution Prevention and Packaging Producer Responsibility Act.
