AB 512: Health care coverage: prior authorization.
This bill aims to amend existing health care coverage laws to streamline the prior or concurrent authorization process for health care services. The bill would reduce the timeline for approval requests from 5 business days or 72 hours for urgent cases to 3 business days or 24 hours, respectively, for electronic submissions and 5 business days or 48 hours, respectively, for non-electronic submissions. The bill would also exclude Medi-Cal managed care plans from these timeline changes. The bill includes a provision that would make a willful violation of this new provision a crime, and it would require a state-mandated local program to implement and enforce these changes. No reimbursement is required for the implementation of this act.
