AB 879: Firearms: unsafe handguns.

California · Assembly · 2025–2026 Regular Session · last verified December 7, 2025

What AB 879 does, verified December 7, 2025

This bill aims to amend the existing law regarding firearms in California. The law prohibits the manufacture, sale, or possession of unsafe handguns. However, it also provides exemptions for certain law enforcement agencies and peace officers who use the handguns as service weapons. The bill would expand this exemption to include peace officers employed by county probation departments, allowing them to satisfy the training requirement by completing a firearm training course. The bill would also expand the application of the crime of improperly storing an unsafe handgun in an unattended vehicle to include additional persons. This would require a state-mandated local program to address the issue. The bill does not provide for state reimbursement of local costs associated with implementing this program.
