SB 387: Physicians and surgeons: special faculty permits: academic medical centers.

California · Senate · 2025–2026 Regular Session · last verified December 13, 2025

What SB 387 does, verified December 13, 2025

The bill aims to modify the requirements for academic medical centers to qualify as such. Currently, these centers must train a minimum of 250 resident physicians annually and be accredited by both the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. The bill would reduce this requirement to 25 resident physicians annually. Additionally, it would exempt these centers from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges accreditation requirement. A representative from a facility that trains 250 resident physicians annually would be required on the review committee to review special faculty permit applications. The bill would also allow each academic medical center to submit up to 5 applications for special faculty permits in a calendar year.
