SB 389: Pupil health: individuals with exceptional needs: respiratory services: licensed vocational nurses.

California · Senate · 2025–2026 Regular Session · last verified December 7, 2025

What SB 389 does, verified December 7, 2025

This bill amends existing laws to expand the role of licensed vocational nurses in providing health care services to individuals with exceptional needs. Currently, these nurses can perform respiratory tasks under the supervision of a credentialed school nurse. The bill would also allow them to perform basic respiratory services such as suctioning, under the same supervision. Individuals with exceptional needs requiring specialized physical health care services during the school day would be assisted by licensed vocational nurses under the supervision of a credentialed school nurse. This expansion aims to improve access to health care services for these students.
