SB 437: California State University: claim eligibility: genealogy and descendancy.

This bill adds a new chapter to the government code, relating to postsecondary education. It authorizes the use of up to $6,000,000 to enable a university to conduct research into the recommendations of a task force on reparation proposals for African Americans. The university must partner with other institutions and consult with the California Legislative Black Caucus to propose research components. The university is required to establish a process for genealogical research to confirm an individual's status as a descendant of an enslaved person. This process must be in place by the start of the 2026-27 academic year, and the university must submit annual reports on its research progress. The final report must include research findings, recommendations, and timelines for statewide implementation.
