SB 602: Veterinarians: veterinarian-client-patient relationship.

California · Senate · 2025–2026 Regular Session · last verified December 6, 2025

What SB 602 does, verified December 6, 2025

This bill amends the veterinary medicine practice act to allow registered veterinary technicians to administer vaccines or medications in certain public or private animal shelters, as long as the veterinarian is in the general vicinity or available by telephone and can quickly respond. The existing law requires the veterinarian to be physically present at the premises or in the vicinity when the technician administers the vaccine or medication. The bill revises this requirement to allow for administration in shelters, as long as the veterinarian is available by phone or in the vicinity. This change would allow for more efficient and effective administration of vaccines and medications in animal shelters, while maintaining the oversight and accountability of licensed veterinarians.
