This act amends the New York Election Law to prohibit contributions made using digital currency to candidates or political committees. The legislation defines digital currency as any digital unit used as a medium of exchange or stored value. While the law explicitly excludes digital currency from the definition of a contribution, it establishes a specific prohibition against accepting such currency for political funding. The act requires that any digital currency contributions received before the effective date be returned to the contributor or remitted to the state comptroller within thirty days of the law taking effect. Additionally, the State Board of Elections is authorized to create necessary rules to implement these provisions and must notify all candidates and political committees of the new requirements before the effective date.
