A 5172: Authorizes funeral directing apprenticeships as an alternative to licensing examinations; requires such apprenticeships to be one- to four-year programs led by licensing funeral directors; makes related provisions.
The bill aims to provide an alternative to licensing examinations for funeral directors. It allows individuals who have completed a course of collegiate-level study in funeral service to participate in a funeral directing apprenticeship, which can lead to licensure. The apprenticeship must be certified by the department and include specialized curriculum models that cover topics such as embalming techniques, funeral arrangement procedures, and industry best practices. Upon completion of the apprenticeship, individuals will be issued a certificate of completion, which qualifies them to be licensed as a funeral director and undertaker and embalmer. The bill also establishes a process for issuing licenses to those who complete a funeral directing apprenticeship and pay a fee.
