A 5266: Adds to the penalties for the underage use of cannabis the office of cannabis management contacting the person's parents and/or guardians and such person and their parents and/or guardians attending a cannabis diversion program.
The proposed law aims to reduce underage cannabis use in New York State. The law would impose a civil penalty of up to $50 on individuals under the age of 18 who use cannabis. The fine would be payable to the Office of Cannabis Management, which would also notify the individual's parents or guardians of the violation. The Office of Cannabis Management would require the individual and their parents or guardians to attend a cannabis diversion program to assess for substance use disorders. This program would help address potential underlying issues and prevent further cannabis use. The law would take effect 90 days after it becomes a law, and the necessary rules and regulations would be implemented on its effective date.
