Assembly BillIntroduced
A 6880: Relates to the appointment of commissioners of elections; provides that once a party recommends a person for commissioner of elections the local legislative body shall automatically approve the appointment of such person.
What A 6880 does, verified January 8, 2026
The proposed legislation aims to change the process of appointing commissioners of elections in New York State. The current law requires the county legislative body or the city council to appoint commissioners of elections. However, if a legislative body fails to appoint a recommended person within 30 days, members of the same party can appoint a different person. If no one is appointed within 60 days, a party can file another certificate recommending a different person. The legislative body automatically approves party recommendations for commissioners of elections. The changes take effect immediately.
