A 8126: Provides voters with a warning about New York's closed primary system on voter registration forms.
What A 8126 does, verified January 6, 2026
The proposed law aims to notify voters that New York practices a closed primary system. In this system, to vote in a primary election of a specific party, a voter must enroll in that party, unless the state party rules allow otherwise. The law would require this information to be stated in bold and prominent type on election notices. The changes would take effect two years after the law becomes effective.
