A 8580: Requires victims of firearm violence be offered and/or provided psychiatric care.
The proposed law aims to improve the treatment of victims of firearm violence in hospitals. Every general hospital must develop and implement policies and procedures for identifying, assessing, and referring patients with firearm-related injuries. These policies must also include training for hospital staff on the treatment of firearm violence victims. A designated staff member must be responsible for coordinating with psychiatric services to provide victim assistance. Upon discharge, hospitals must inform victims of the availability of psychiatric services related to firearm violence and facilitate access to these services if requested. To ensure effective implementation, the law requires consultation with relevant experts and the provision of a model policy and lists of organizations offering firearm violence psychiatric services.
