What A 8634 does, verified August 12, 2026

The bill aims to establish maximum contaminant levels and a hazard index for certain per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in drinking water. The maximum contaminant levels will be set at 4 parts per trillion for perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), and 10 parts per trillion for other substances. A hazard index will be established to address cumulative exposure to multiple PFAS, including perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHXS), and others. Public water systems will be required to comply with these requirements by May 1, 2029. The bill will take effect one year after it becomes a law.
