J 1293: Commending Armando Gramajo and Shayla Gramajo upon the occasion of their designation as recipients of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon individuals by the New York State Senate
The Senate is commending Armando Gramajo and his daughter Shayla Gramajo for their heroic actions on May 5, 2024. Armando Gramajo, a bus driver and private handyman, saved the life of a woman who was attacked with a knife by her husband. He used his experience as a soldier in the Guatemalan army to yell at the attacker to stop, which he did. Armando then called for his daughter, Shayla, to aid the victim. Shayla, a graduate of Marist University and a practicing physician's assistant, used her medical knowledge to put pressure on the wounds and reassure the woman until emergency services arrived. Their actions saved a precious life and demonstrated their character and compassion for others. The Senate is recognizing their bravery and kindness with the highest honor bestowed upon individuals by the Senate.
