S 4618: Excludes volunteer firefighters and emergency medical services employees from the permissive use of marijuana.
The bill aims to exclude volunteer firefighters and emergency medical services employees from the state's marijuana use regulations. These employees are considered "exempt" if they work in fire agencies providing public safety services, such as driving fire apparatus, operating in hazardous atmospheres, and delivering emergency medical care. The bill prohibits the use of marijuana by exempt employees while on duty and requires exempt agencies to take measures to ensure their employees are not impaired by cannabis, including preemployment testing and random drug testing. Employees who are prescribed medical cannabis are also required to report their prescription to their agency, which must consult with a medical director to determine the employee's fitness for duty and any necessary restrictions. The bill takes effect immediately.
