S 4902: Requires cell towers to be equipped with a back-up power source in case of a power outage.
The state of New York is requiring cell tower owners to install emergency back-up power sources in case of a power outage. These power sources must use renewable energy systems, fuel cell electric generating equipment, or energy storage systems and can power a cell tower site for at least 72 hours. Existing cell tower sites that already have emergency back-up power sources do not need to update them to meet the new requirements, but they must be replaced with a new one that meets the requirements when it needs to be replaced. The new requirement applies to macro cell tower sites, which are places where wireless telecommunications equipment and network components are located, but excludes rooftop, small cell, and distributed antenna system sites. The new law will take effect 90 days after it becomes a law.
