S 5617: Provides for state reimbursement for lost tax revenue due to devaluation of land as a result of toxic contamination.
What S 5617 does, verified January 9, 2026
The state of New York is providing reimbursement to municipalities affected by toxic contamination. Municipalities in Rensselaer County that have reduced their tax levy on properties contaminated by the Dewey Loeffel landfill are eligible for reimbursement. The reimbursement covers the difference between the actual valuation of the properties and the reduced assessed value due to contamination. The system of reimbursement will continue until the landfill is removed from the state's hazardous waste sites. The reimbursement is made annually upon application by the municipality's chief fiscal officer to the comptroller.
