What S 6360 does, verified August 27, 2025

The bill aims to clarify provisions regarding the use of crossbows for hunting in New York State. Crossbows are now defined as part of the longbow category, which also includes longbows, recurve bows, compound bows, and crossbows. To use a crossbow, it must consist of a bow and string, have a working safety, and meet specific minimum requirements, such as a minimum peak draw weight of 100 pounds and a minimum overall length of 24 inches. The bill also establishes special seasons and open seasons for deer hunting, including a seven-day special open season in the southern zone preceding the regular open season. Additionally, the bill allows licensed persons to hunt big game using crossbows in certain areas, subject to specific regulations. Finally, the bill prohibits discharging crossbows within 500 feet of certain structures, such as dwelling houses, schools, and churches.
