What S 7271 does, verified January 9, 2026

The bill proposes to amend the penal law to expand the definition of criminal mischief in the third degree. A person can be guilty of this offense if they intentionally damage another person's property without a right or reasonable ground to believe they have a right, or if the damage is excessive (over $2,500) or is done to promote or suppress a political ideology. This expansion aims to provide greater protection for property owners and individuals whose rights are not being respected.
