What S 8183 does, verified September 28, 2025

The bill aims to amend the Village Law and the Public Officers Law to relax residency requirements for certain village officials. The Village Board of Trustees in a specific village may allow a person to hold the office of village clerk-treasurer or deputy clerk without being a resident of the village, provided they reside in Nassau County or an adjoining county. This change is intended to facilitate the recruitment of qualified candidates for these positions. The bill also clarifies that a person holding the office of village clerk-treasurer or deputy clerk in another village must be a resident of that village, unless otherwise provided by law. The changes take effect immediately.
