What S 8696 does, verified July 16, 2026

The state of New York is requiring the State University of New York to install solar canopies on its campuses. The university must calculate the total amount of parking space available for solar canopies and aim to use at least 75% of it within 10 years. Any new construction projects on campuses must include solar canopies in parking facilities, unless the university has already reached the 75% goal. The term "parking facility" refers to any area where parking spaces are available for public, faculty, staff, student, or pay-per-usage purposes. A "solar canopy" is a system designed to capture solar radiation for energy production. The bill takes effect immediately.
