Senate BillIntroduced
S 8855: Tolls the statute of limitations for endangering the welfare of a child until such child reaches the age of twenty-three.
What S 8855 does, verified January 12, 2026
The bill aims to amend the criminal procedure law to extend the statute of limitations for certain sex crimes committed against minors. The law currently allows for the prosecution of such crimes if they are reported to a law enforcement agency or a central register of child abuse and maltreatment before the victim reaches the age of 23. However, the bill proposes to extend this timeframe to allow for the prosecution of such crimes if the victim reaches the age of 23, or if the crime is reported, whichever occurs first. This change is intended to ensure that victims have more time to come forward and seek justice for past abuses.
