New York · Senate · 2025–2026 Legislative Session · last verified March 6, 2026

What S 8885 does, verified March 6, 2026

The proposed legislation aims to expand the definition of "minority group member" under the Executive Law in New York. Currently, the definition only includes Native American or Alaskan Native persons and Asian and Pacific Islander persons. The proposed bill adds two new groups to the definition: Native American or Alaskan Native persons with origins in any of the original peoples of North America and persons with disabilities as defined in the Education Law. These changes will provide greater representation and inclusivity for these previously underrepresented groups.
