S 9473: Prohibits game taken by a firearm using lead ammunition from being donated for human consumption.
What S 9473 does, verified May 5, 2026
The bill aims to reduce lead exposure in New York State by promoting the use of non-lead ammunition. It amends the Environmental Conservation Law and the Agriculture and Markets Law to allow game taken with non-lead ammunition to be donated to charitable organizations, which then distribute the game to the poor or needy. Donated game must be tagged, labeled, or marked "not for sale" and meet specific safety and sanitary standards. The bill also establishes a list of non-lead ammunition recognized by the state and prohibits the donation of game taken with lead ammunition. The law will take effect two years after the bill becomes a law.
