HB 654: Enact Amanda Dean's Law

Ohio · House · 136th General Assembly (2025–2026) · last verified October 1, 2026

What HB 654 does, verified October 1, 2026

This bill amends Ohio's Revised Code to increase penalties for abuse of a corpse. It makes treating a human corpse in a way that outrages family sensibilities a second-degree felony of the fifth degree, while treating it in a way that outrages community sensibilities is a felony of the fifth-fourth degree. Disfiguring or mutilating a corpse is a felony of the third degree if done for the purpose of concealing a crime or obstructing justice, and a felony of the second degree if done for other purposes. The existing law is repealed and replaced with a new law, known as Amanda Dean's Law, to honor the memory of a young girl who was murdered and disfigured after her death.
