What AB 1626 does, verified August 25, 2026

This bill aims to improve the mental health and well-being of youth athletes by requiring coaches to complete training on behavioral and mental health topics. The training will be a model developed by the state department of education and will cover topics such as sports psychology, trauma-informed care, and mental health-related issues. All coaches who serve in interscholastic athletic programs at high schools, including private high schools, will be required to complete initial training and subsequent training every two years. The bill also requires the state department of education to develop a model youth athletics behavioral and mental health training for coaches in youth sports organizations, both recreational and competitive, and to disseminate the training to relevant organizations and associations.
