AB 1974: Firearms: voluntary firearm storage program.

A new law would allow individuals to voluntarily transfer their firearms to local law enforcement agencies for safekeeping to prevent firearm violence and other injuries. The law enforcement agency would provide clear instructions on the procedure and process for returning the firearm. Upon receiving the firearm, the agency would check a database to ensure it has not been reported lost, stolen, or involved in a crime, and verify the individual's eligibility to possess firearms. If the individual fails to retrieve the firearm after a specified time period, the agency would destroy it. This law would exempt the voluntary transfer of firearms from existing regulations and prohibitions on carrying or selling firearms.
