California · Assembly · 2025–2026 Regular Session · last verified May 16, 2026

What AB 2517 does, verified May 16, 2026

This bill aims to improve fire safety in California by enhancing the process of designating fire hazard severity zones. The state fire marshal will be required to post information on its website, conduct public workshops, and host a 30-day public comment period before finalizing the designation of local responsibility areas as moderate, high, and very high fire hazard severity zones. The state fire marshal will also review and recommend changes to these zones every 5 years, starting from January 1, 2030. Local agencies will have the discretion to increase the level of fire hazard severity for parcels containing multiple designations. Additionally, the state fire marshal will publish local ordinances on its website within 60 days of receipt.
