AB 279: School libraries: model library standards.

California · Assembly · 2025–2026 Regular Session · last verified December 7, 2025

What AB 279 does, verified December 7, 2025

This bill requires the state to update its standards for school libraries every 8 years, starting in 2028. The superintendent of public instruction will lead the process, in consultation with the state board and the instructional quality commission. A group of experts will help develop the new standards, and the public will have a chance to provide input through at least two public hearings. The state board will then adopt, reject, or modify the new standards. The bill also requires an appropriation to support the process.
