AB 2794: Postsecondary education: nonresident tuition: exemption: federal GI Bill.
This bill would amend the education code to exempt students from paying nonresident tuition and fees to attend public postsecondary educational institutions if they are California residents, meet the definition of a "covered individual" under federal law, and are eligible for education benefits under certain federal GI bill programs. Specifically, it would add the Montgomery GI Bill-Selected Reserve program to the list of eligible programs and specify that federal law as of January 5, 2026, applies. The bill would also require community colleges to determine eligibility for the exemption and impose a state-mandated local program if necessary. If the commission on state mandates determines that the bill contains mandated costs, reimbursement would be made to local agencies and school districts.
