AB 422: State Seal of Civic Engagement.
The bill aims to amend the education code to enhance civics education and the state seal of civic engagement. The state seal of civic engagement is awarded to pupils who demonstrate excellence in civics education and participation. To be eligible, pupils must meet certain criteria, including the successful completion of history, government, and civics courses. The bill requires pupils to also demonstrate an understanding of preserving democracy and its vital institutions. The superintendent must recommend revised criteria for the state seal of civic engagement to the state board when the criteria are next revised. The state board will then adopt, reject, or modify the recommended criteria.
