This bill aims to improve the process of obtaining restraining orders in California. It would allow petitioners to file restraining orders and related documents electronically, starting January 1, 2027, without incurring a filing fee. Petitioners would also receive electronic copies of the request, notice of the court date, copies of the request to serve on the respondent, and the temporary restraining order, unless they opt to pick up the documents from the court. Remote appearances at hearings for restraining orders would be permitted, and the superior court would not charge a fee for this service. Courts would develop and post local rules and instructions for remote appearances on their websites.
