What AB 849 does, verified December 7, 2025

This bill requires healthcare providers to offer a medical chaperone for sensitive examinations, such as ultrasounds of the genital area. The chaperone must be available upon patient request and can be a staff member or an external provider. The provider must educate staff about observational and intervention techniques and document the chaperone's presence in the patient's record. The law also specifies how notice must be provided to patients, which can be in writing, electronically, or verbally. The provisions take effect on January 1, 2027.
