AB 998: Household hazardous waste: vape pens.
This bill aims to regulate the management and disposal of vape pens, specifically those confiscated from students by schools. Until January 1, 2029, the Department of Toxic Substances Control must evaluate opportunities to increase safety and convenience in handling vape pens. A household hazardous waste collection facility can conduct physical treatment activities, including disassembling vape pens, without releasing hazardous materials. The bill also prohibits public agencies and their contractors from including vape pens in materials exchange programs. Reimbursement for costs related to this bill is not required.
