SB 584: Pupil instruction: civic engagement.
The bill aims to expand the California serves program to promote access to effective service learning for students in grades 1-12. It would require the state department of education to review evidence on incorporating service learning, develop model metrics for measuring pupil progress, and provide recommendations on evidence-based strategies. The bill would also require school districts to implement a civic engagement pathway program for students in grades 1-8, increasing civic awareness and engagement. Additionally, the bill would require the instructional quality commission to consider civic engagement experiences when revising the history-social science framework. Reimbursement for mandated costs would be provided if the commission determines that the bill contains state-mandated costs.
