SB 918: Food facilities: retail food safety.

California · Senate · 2025–2026 Regular Session · last verified August 23, 2026

What SB 918 does, verified August 23, 2026

This bill amends the California Retail Food Code to update the requirements for passthrough window service openings. The bill removes the need for a self-closing device for solid or screened windows with a 216 square inch opening, and instead allows for a 432 square inch opening with either a self-closing device or an air curtain device. The bill also allows for larger openings if equipped with both a self-closing device and an air curtain device. Passthrough windows can be used specifically for food delivery operations, not as a general entrance or exit for employees or customers. The state is not required to reimburse local agencies or school districts for the costs of implementing this bill.
