What S 5260 does, verified January 9, 2026

The proposed law aims to improve patient safety and informed consent when issuing prescriptions for Schedule II opioids. Before issuing a prescription, healthcare providers must consult with patients about filling the prescription in a lesser quantity and inform them of the risks associated with opiate addiction. The law also requires healthcare providers to document the reason for the opioid prescription in the patient's medical record. These changes are intended to promote responsible prescribing practices and better support patients in managing their opioid use.
