AB 992: Peace officers.

This bill aims to reform the education requirements for peace officers in California. The commission on peace officer standards and training would no longer be required to approve and adopt education criteria. A peace officer must meet certain requirements, including being a high school graduate or equivalent, or having a degree from an accredited college or university. The bill allows foreign college or university degrees to be evaluated for equivalency purposes. Peace officers must attain one or more specified degrees or certificates within a certain timeframe, depending on their experience. Exceptions apply to certain individuals, including those with 8 years of experience as a sworn peace officer, military service, or currently enrolled in a basic academy. Coursework completed as part of military or law enforcement training can count towards a degree or certificate.
