SB 1147: Pupil instruction: high school graduation requirements: personal finance.
The bill aims to enhance high school graduation requirements by incorporating personal finance education. Existing law requires a one-semester course in economics, and starting from the 2027-28 school year, a separate, stand-alone one-semester course in personal finance must be offered. The course should cover essential financial literacy topics. Local educational agencies are authorized to exempt pupils who complete the personal finance course from the economics requirement. Additionally, pupils who complete a year-long course equivalent in quality and rigor to the personal finance course may be exempt from the economics requirement and receive credit for their coursework.
